Emergency Preparedness Coordinator

  • Communicate with senior staff and other key personnel in the event of an emergency

  • To coordinate, instruct and familiarize Fire Marshals (all Bates employees) in fire evacuation procedures and related tasks

  • Keep the department Emergency Preparedness Plan up-to-date and communicate the plan to department personnel

  • Develop and maintain Emergency Preparedness Plan template to conform to OSHA standards; review department plans

  • Provide knowledge to responders and department members on building infrastructure and safety during an emergency.This includes informing department members of the operational status of building ventilation systems.

  • Provide evacuation maps/route diagrams posted throughout the facility as well as maintain and update map format

Shelter locations are clearly marked on the door tags and a SIP KIT is stored in each of the locations.

Facilities staff members are responsible for shutting off the air handling equipment.

ACTIVE SHOOTER 

RUN – Evacuate the area.   If the sound of gun shots are far away and you can safely do so, access an exit:

  • GET OUT IMMEDIATELY!

  • Call 911

HIDE – Take immediate refuge.  If you feel the shooter is close to you and you cannot safely exit the building:

  • Lock doors, use door stops, bar door with desks, turn off lights, silence cell phones

  • Search for objects that can be used as weapons

  • Call 911 (via land line if possible)

FIGHT – Attack the shooter.   If the shooter has entered the room you are in:

  • Obtain improvised weapons (scissors, letter opener, fire extinguisher)

  • Immediately attack shooter – direct your attack at his/her head/face

  • Do not attempt to plead or bargain with the shooter
