Project 8 is a new experiment led by Professor Formaggio, employing a novel technique to measure neutrino masses. The mass of electrons from tritium beta decay would be measured by detecting the frequency of the cyclotron radiation as the electrons pass through a high magnetic field. A conceptual sketch of the experiment is shown in Figure A.8.1. The experiment is in the prototyping stage. Bates staff have provided support for prototype testing in the areas of a power supply for an existing cyclotron magnet and the krypton source to provide ~18 keV electrons, at the level of 0.1 man-year of engineering and 0.1 man-year of technician for BY 2011 through March 2013, with another 0.2 man-year of effort expected for the remainder of BY 2013. |
